Can you believe this is the last week until Christmas break? We have a fun week planed in first grade but before that students will be complete their unit 4 math assessment. First graders will be "traveling" this week learning about holidays around the world. We will "visit" Germany, England, Italy, and Mexico. Students will read about each country and how they celebrate the holidays, write about what they learned and create a craft relating to the country. We will have our holiday party on Thursday, December 20 at 1:45. We hope to see you all there! Have a great week, restful break and a very Merry Christmas!

Looking forward to see you all! This week students will learn about doubles facts in math. We will practice addition problems with a sum of 10. In Fundations, we will practice one more week with the suffix -s and students will be tested on Friday. In reading, we will complete our Folktale unit by reading different versions of The Gingerbread Man. Students will compare and contrast the stories and write their opinion of a character. In math we will be exploring measurement. We have begun our unit in Folktales. Students will know what a folktale is and all of its elements. In fundations we will complete our -am and -an unit. Students will be tested on Friday. Students will practice identifying problems and solutions in realistic fiction stories and we will complete personal narratives in writing with a celebration in writing. This week in science we will begin our unit on seasons. With the cold weather beginning this week please be sure to send students in with jackets! Have a great week! Wednesday is Halloween! We will be celebrating with a 10:00 Halloween Parade. Please send your student to school with their costume, we will get dressed after specials. We hope to see you at 10:00! Scholastic Book orders due Friday, please place orders online! This week students will practice reading strategies like chunky monkey, skippy the frog and flippy the dolphin. We will complete unit 2 in math, practicing addition and subtraction. In fundations, students will learn about bonus letters and the glued sound -all. In writing, we will begin writing personal narrative. Students will create topic list, characters, and setting. In Science, students will show what they know about Patterns in Space. October 31 @ 10:00 is the Halloween Parade. Please send your students in with their costumes. Please no weapon props, masks, or face paint. This week students will be learning new reading strategies. We will practice eagle eye (looking at the pictures), Lips the Fish/Stretchy Snake (sounding out the words) Tryin' Lion (trying out best) and sight words. In Fundations students will continue practicing words with digraphs (wh, she, th, ch, ck). Students will be assessed on this skill at the end of the week. In math students are practicing adding numbers together to make 10. We will begin our personal narrative unit in writing. Students will brainstorm true stories that happened to them. In science we will observe the sky and moon phases.

Students can wear their Halloween costumes but no masks, weapons, or face paint are allowed. In reading this week students will learn some strategies to help them dive deeper in their reading. We will practice making connections, asking questions, and thinking about our reading. We will complete unit 1 in math with an assessment on Wednesday. Students will also be assessed in Fundations after practicing more CVC words. In writing, we will practice publishing a writing piece and giving peer feedback.
