This week students will learn a new suffix (-es) and practice reading one and two syllable word with that suffix. In math, we will complete unit 8 with an assessment. In reading and writing, students will complete their research unit by researching an animal and its habitat.

This week students will learn about two syllable words. We will practice reading and writing multisyllabic words with close syllables and vowel-consonant-e. In math, we will begin unit 8. Students will learn about parts of shapes, focusing on halves and fourths. In reading and writing, we will continue our habitat unit. Last week students explored the ocean, this week we will be visiting the rain forest. Students will conduct research and produce writing on what they've learned about the rainforest.
Monday May 13, we will have our field trip to the Seacoast Science Center! We will be leaving school at promptly 9:00. Please make sure your child is on time to school. Snack will be provided for them. We will be returning to school for lunch so please either pack your child a lunch or have them buy at school. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the day, we will be exploring tide pools so water proof shoes are recommended. Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful vacation.
This week students will continue to practice reading and writing words with the silent e. We will have an assessment on Friday. In math, students will learn about function machines, practicing finding the patterns and relationships between numbers. In reading, students will learn what Non-fiction text features are and how they can be used as a tool while reading non-fiction. In writing, we will finish up poetry. This week students will continue reading and spelling vowel-consonant-e words. In math, we will explore shapes and their attributes. We will be beginning our non-fiction unit in reading, learning about habitats. This will be a research unit that will cover reading and writing. In science, students will be learning about communication. Enjoy a restful and fun April vacation! March became such a busy week, how is it already April! It has been a while but here is what is new and happening in first grade!
In Fundations students will be introduced to the vowel consonant e syllable. We will spend three weeks practicing before testing. In math, we will explore fact families. Students will begin to make the connection between addition and subtraction. We will conclude our Poetry unit this week. Students will practice rhyming, learn how to write a shape poem and cinquain poem. In science, we will learn about communication. There will be a half day for students Friday 4/5. Dismissal will be at 12:00. There will be no lunch and recess but please send your child with a snack. EXCITING CAFETERIA NEWS~ Ice Cream ~ Please notice new start date! We are happy to announce a new A-List snack option at Penn Brook Elementary starting April 12, 2019. Using our” Wellness Policy” as guidance, we are excited to bring “Ice Cream Friday’s” to the cafeteria. We will be offering 3-4 choices of novelty ice cream. They are all processed in a nut free facility, and select items contain no artificial coloring or high fructose corn syrup, Several are even gluten free and considered a “smart snack” according to the USDA school lunch program! In order to keep things simple, ice cream will be sold at lunch on Friday only, as a cash sale (cannot be purchased through My School Bucks account)and cost $1. We are thrilled to provide this at Penn Brook seeing it has been such a welcomed treat at GMHS for years. More info to come in the following weeks. This week students will learn what a closed syllable is in Fundations. We will complete our money unit with a test at the end of the week. Students will continue writing their own realistic fiction stories. Have a wonderful week! Happy 100th Day of school! First Graders have been working so hard for 100 days! Today we had fun celebrating. As a class we read 100 books! Below is a picture. This week we have a lot of celebrating happening with the 100th day, Valentine's Day and learning about Presidents Day. We will be celebrating Valentine's Day with a classroom party, if you would like to participate in Valentines please make sure there is a Valentine for each student. A class list was sent home last week, if you need another copy please let me know! We will continue learning about money by counting coins. Students will learn about a closed syllable in Fundations. In writing, we will talk about every day problems and create problems and solutions to stories.
If you are coming in to volunteer please make sure you have an up to date CORI form. If you need one you can go to Perley Preschool. Have a great week and a restful vacation! This week students will continue learning how to read and write words with blends. There will be a Fundations test on Friday. In math, we will begin our money unit. Students will learn the name of each coin and their value. In reading, we will continue practicing reading strategies. In writing, students will begin the process of creating their own realistic fiction story by creating a character.
Valentine's Day: We will be having a Valentine's Day party with a craft and treat! This is a classroom only celebration. If your child would like to participate in giving Valentine's there is a class list coming home today. Please make sure there is a Valentine for each student in the classroom and please no candy. Friday 2/8 is a half day for students. Dismissal is at 12:00, there is no lunch but please bring a snack. Students earned another 100 leaves and decided to make box forts! Thank you for all your box donations! Students had a blast working together to create unique designs!

This week students will begin a three week Fundations unit on glued sounds. Students will be learning about -ang, -ing, -ung, and -ong. We will practice reading, writing and marking words with these glued sounds. In math, students will be introduced to place value using base 10 blocks. In reading, we will be revisiting realistic fiction practicing questioning while we read. Questioning while reading will further students understanding. In writing, we will be writing about our vacations. |
